The 2-Day Inca Trail is the ultimate mountain hack for those who want the soul of the trek without the four-day commitment. At Via Inca Travel, we don’t just walk the path; we own the operation. As locals who live and breathe the Andes, we have engineered a strategy that puts you at the Sun Gate (Inti Punku) during the afternoon when the crowds have vanished and the citadel is bathed in the perfect light for your memories.

While others focus on volume, we focus on the spiritual power of the journey. This is your moment to walk the path of the Inca kings through lush cloud forests and ancient stone ruins with the true masters of the trail.

Detailed 2-Day Short Inca Trail Itinerary

Our native guides do not simply recite dates from guidebooks. They share ancient Andean legends, architectural secrets, and cultural depth that bring every stone site to life.

Your expedition begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel in Cusco (~4:00 AM). We drive through the Sacred Valley to the Ollantaytambo station to board the train to Km 104 (6,889 ft / 2,100 m), the official checkpoint for the Short Inca Trail. After crossing the suspension bridge over the Urubamba River and clearing government permit checks, our trek begins.

Our first archaeological stop is Chachabamba (7,120 ft / 2,170 m), an ancient Incan ceremonial complex tucked in the valley where your guide explains sacred water rituals and agricultural administration. From Chachabamba, we begin a 3-hour uphill climb along original stone Incan staircases, passing through lush subtropical cloud forest filled with wild orchids, ferns, and native birds.

We arrive at the magnificent archaeological site of Wiñay Wayna (“Forever Young” – 8,692 ft / 2,650 m), perched dramatically on a steep mountain slope overlooking the Urubamba River. We explore its terraced agricultural sectors, ritual fountains, and stone towers before enjoying a nourishing box lunch. Continuing along an easy undulating stone path through the cloud forest, we reach Inti Punku (The Sun Gate – 8,923 ft / 2,720 m) in the late afternoon.

Reaching Inti Punku during the quieter late afternoon hours provides a stunning panoramic view of Machu Picchu bathed in soft sunlight after most day-trippers have left. After capturing photos and soaking in the view, we descend the path toward the upper terraces of the citadel, where we take the Consettur shuttle bus down to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo – 6,692 ft / 2,040 m) for check-in at your selected partner hotel and dinner.

After breakfast at your hotel, we board an early Consettur bus to ascend the winding Hiram Bingham road to the sanctuary gates. Today is dedicated to exploring the architectural and historical depths of the citadel.

Your university-licensed guide will lead a detailed 2 to 2.5-hour tour through the ruins. You will explore the main sectors, including the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana sundial, the Sacred Plaza, and the Royal Quarters, learning about earthquake-proof Incan masonry, astronomy, and urban planning.

Note: Specific entry circuits (Circuit 1, 2, or 3) and entry time slots depend strictly on official government availability at the exact time of reservation. We strongly recommend booking as far in advance as possible to secure the best available route.

Following the guided tour, we take the shuttle bus back down to Aguas Calientes. You will have time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant (not included) before boarding your afternoon return train to Ollantaytambo. At the station, our driver will meet you for the final transfer back to your hotel in Cusco, concluding your 2-day Inca Trail experience.

Essential Trip Planning Information

Advance Booking Requirement: Government permits for the Short Inca Trail are strictly limited per day. We strongly recommend booking at least 2 to 3 months in advance to guarantee permit availability for your preferred date.

Passport Requirements: Your passport details must match your Short Inca Trail permit exactly. You MUST present your original physical passport at the Km 104 checkpoint and Machu Picchu entrance.

Acclimatization Recommendation: Although the Short Inca Trail reaches lower elevations than Cusco (maximum elevation at Inti Punku is 8,923 ft / 2,720 m), we recommend spending at least 1 or 2 days in Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,400 m) or the Sacred Valley prior to the hike.

Physical Pace & Trek Distance: Day 1 involves a 12 km (7.5 mile) trek over unpaved stone paths, uphill steps, and dirt trails (approx. 6 hours of hiking). Moderate physical fitness is required.

Packing & Luggage Rules: Train operators restrict hand luggage on trains to 5kg / 11 lbs per person. Your main luggage will remain safely stored at your Cusco hotel free of charge. Carry a small daypack with water, rain gear, sunscreen, insect repellent, camera, and clothes for Day 2.

Weather & Essentials: The trek passes through tropical cloud forest terrain where weather can change from sunshine to rain showers. Pack a waterproof rain jacket, light breathable layers, comfortable broken-in hiking shoes with good traction, hat, UV sunglasses, and DEET insect repellent.

Tick off the bucket list and then some. I booked this trek with Nixon via viator tours. he was professional. imformative, accommodating , super helpful and went over and above to book us at short notice and to help us with treking gear as our own gear was in lost baggage somewhere in some unknown airport. Our Guide Marco was relaxed , fun and so easy to get along with . He was highly educated on every aspect of the history and geography of the flora and fauna , topography and culture of the places and people associated with this trek .
