There is no sugarcoating it: Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is an absolute masterpiece of geology, but it is also a formidable physical challenge. Standing at a staggering 16,522 feet (5,036 m), the thin air is a reality that every traveler must face. Most agencies offer a standard “march to the top,” but we believe in options that prioritize your experience and comfort.

At Via Inca Travel, we’ve engineered the best Rainbow Mountain tour by blending safety with adventure. Whether you choose the traditional trek to test your limits or opt for an ATV Rainbow Mountain tour to zip across the Altiplano, we ensure small-group logistics and an early departure. We provide a high-altitude strategy that guarantees you spend your energy on photography, not just gasping for air.

Detailed 1-Day Full Day Rainbow Mountain Itinerary

Our native guides do not simply recite dates from guidebooks. They share ancient Andean legends, architectural secrets, and cultural depth that bring every stone site to life.

Your high-altitude adventure begins with an early pick-up from your Cusco hotel around 4:00 AM. Boarding our comfortable small-group transport, we drive south through the Cusco valley toward the high Altiplano. As dawn breaks over the frost-covered fields, we stop at a local village community (Cusipata or Pitumarca) to enjoy a warm, energy-filled traditional Andean breakfast, which is essential fuel for the altitude ahead.

After breakfast, we continue driving up the winding mountain road to the trailhead at Phulawasipata (approx. 15,000 ft / 4,600 m). Here, the air turns crisp and noticeably thinner. Your university-licensed guide provides a full safety briefing, distributes hiking poles, and checks everyone’s condition. For the classic trekking experience, you begin the gradual 1.5 to 2-hour uphill walk along the red-earth path, surrounded by grazing alpacas, llamas, and sweeping views of the majestic snow-capped Apu Ausangate glacier.

Upon reaching the final crest, you step onto the iconic main ridge of Vinicunca (16,522 ft / 5,036 m). The horizon opens to reveal the famous mineral-painted mountains with turquoise, gold, lavender, and deep red stripes created by centuries of weathering and trace minerals. You will have ample time at the summit viewpoint to take photos, absorb the panoramic views of the Vilcanota mountain range, and listen as your guide explains the cultural significance of these sacred peaks in Andean cosmology.

After capturing photos and taking in the summit scenery, we begin our descent back to the trailhead (approx. 1 hour). We return by transport to the community restaurant for a rewarding local buffet lunch featuring fresh ingredients. Following lunch, we begin the return drive to Cusco, arriving back near the historic center around 4:30 PM to 5:00 PM, concluding an unforgettable high-altitude trek.

Essential Trip Planning Information

Mandatory Acclimatization Strategy: Rainbow Mountain reaches an extreme altitude of 16,522 ft (5,036 m). We strongly require that travelers spend at least 2 to 3 days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley prior to taking this trek to minimize the risk of severe altitude sickness (Soroche).

Health & Physical Fitness: This trek requires moderate to high physical fitness due to the steep terrain and thin air. Travelers with heart conditions, severe respiratory issues, or high blood pressure should consult a doctor before undertaking high-altitude hikes.

Weather & Microclimates: Weather at 16,000 feet changes rapidly. Snow, hail, intense wind, or high UV sun can occur within the same hour. Always dress in warm thermal layers and bring a windbreaker/waterproof jacket, warm beanie, gloves, UV sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm.

Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots or trail running shoes with good ankle support and tread are essential for the unpaved mountain trail.

Local Community Horse Rentals: Local indigenous families offer horse rentals at the trailhead for part of the ascent. This service is managed directly by community members on-site and is not included in the tour price.

Tick off the bucket list and then some. I booked this trek with Nixon via viator tours. he was professional. imformative, accommodating , super helpful and went over and above to book us at short notice and to help us with treking gear as our own gear was in lost baggage somewhere in some unknown airport. Our Guide Marco was relaxed , fun and so easy to get along with . He was highly educated on every aspect of the history and geography of the flora and fauna , topography and culture of the places and people associated with this trek .
