Full Day Humantay Lake Tour: Glacial Trek at Mount Salkantay

Mollepata,Soraypampa, Lagoon Humantay
Duration 1 Day
Group Type Group or Private
Max Altitude 4,200 m
Activity Level Moderado

There is a specific shade of turquoise that only exists at 13,779 feet (4,200 m), where the melting ice of a tropical glacier meets the mineral-rich earth of the Andes. Humantay Lake (Laguna Humantay) is not just a destination; it is a sacred site nestled at the base of the towering Salkantay peak. While many agencies treat this as a quick stop, we treat it as a true high-altitude expedition.

At Via Inca Travel, we know that the Humantay Lake hike difficulty is often underestimated. The climb is steep, the air is thin, and the mountain weather can change rapidly. Our Humantay Lake tour from Cusco is designed to mitigate these challenges through thoughtful logistics. We leave early in small-group settings to ensure you experience the serene beauty of the glacier before the mid-day crowds arrive.

Detailed 1-Day Full Day Humantay Lake Itinerary

Our native guides do not simply recite dates from guidebooks. They share ancient Andean legends, architectural secrets, and cultural depth that bring every stone site to life.

Your high-altitude journey begins in the quiet early hours of the morning, with an estimated pickup from your Cusco hotel around 4:00 AM. Boarding our comfortable small-group transport, we drive west out of Cusco through the scenic Limatambo Valley. As the sun rises over the Andean hills, we arrive at the village of Mollepata (9,514 ft / 2,900 m), where we stop for a hearty, energizing traditional breakfast to prepare for the ascent ahead.

Following breakfast, we continue driving for approximately one hour along a winding unpaved road to the trailhead at Soraypampa (12,795 ft / 3,900 m). Here, beneath the dramatic snow-capped peaks of Mount Salkantay and Mount Humantay, the air is crisp, cool, and thin. Your university-licensed guide conducts a full safety briefing, distributes hiking poles, and checks everyone’s condition. From Soraypampa, we begin the steady, uphill trek to the lake.

The ascent to Humantay Lake is a steep, 1.5 to 2-hour hike over unpaved mountain terrain. As you climb, you will be surrounded by the sweeping high-altitude Altiplano landscape. (For travelers who feel the strain of the elevation, local horses are available for hire directly from community members at the trailhead as an optional service).

Upon cresting the final ridge, the stunning vista unfolds: the emerald-turquoise waters of Humantay Lake (13,779 ft / 4,200 m) gleaming directly beneath the massive hanging glacier of Mount Humantay. You will have ample time to relax along the shore, take photos, marvel at the glacial ice reflection, and participate in a traditional Apacheta offering of coca leaves to the sacred Apu spirits with your guide.

After soaking in the high-mountain atmosphere, we begin our descent back to Soraypampa (approx. 1 hour). We board our transport back to Mollepata for a well-deserved local buffet lunch. After lunch, we return to Cusco, arriving near the historic center around 5:00 PM to 5:30 PM, concluding a memorable day trek.

Essential Trip Planning Information

Mandatory Acclimatization Strategy: Humantay Lake sits at an altitude of 13,779 ft (4,200 m). We strongly require that travelers spend at least 2 days acclimatizing in Cusco or the Sacred Valley prior to taking this trek to minimize the risk of altitude sickness (Soroche).

Health & Physical Fitness: This hike involves a steep vertical ascent over unpaved trails. Moderate physical fitness is recommended. Travelers with heart conditions, severe respiratory issues, or high blood pressure should consult a doctor before undertaking high-altitude hikes.

Weather & Microclimates: Weather at glacial elevations is unpredictable and cold. Bring warm thermal layers, a waterproof/windbreaker jacket, warm beanie, gloves, UV sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm.

Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots or trail running shoes with good traction are essential for the gravel path.

Local Community Horse Rentals: Local indigenous families offer horse rentals at the Soraypampa trailhead for the ascent. This service is managed directly by community members on-site and is not included in the tour price.

Tick off the bucket list and then some. I booked this trek with Nixon via viator tours. he was professional. imformative, accommodating , super helpful and went over and above to book us at short notice and to help us with treking gear as our own gear was in lost baggage somewhere in some unknown airport. Our Guide Marco was relaxed , fun and so easy to get along with . He was highly educated on every aspect of the history and geography of the flora and fauna , topography and culture of the places and people associated with this trek .
